Program Goals

The internship program has the following goals for students in the program.

  • To promote competence in professionalism and commitment to values, ethics, and client welfare
  • To encourage ongoing professional self-development and identity, including in the roles psychologists can play in multiple settings in the changing field of psychology
  • To promote clinical skills that are based on empirically-based principles and well-articulated theories of practice
  • To develop competence in effective understanding, advocacy, and empowerment of clients regarding the multiple systems that impact them
  • To promote competence in and reinforce commitment to working with individuals from urban populations of color
  • To promote competence in ethical practice and professionalism
  • To promote skills in working collaboratively with other disciplines
  • To develop professional competence in methods of diagnosis and assessment for either children or adults, with a particular focus on urban populations of color, and high need populations
  • To develop professional competence in methods of psychotherapeutic intervention for either children or adults, with a particular focus on underserved, urban populations of color, and high need populations
  • To develop professional competence in methods of consultation and assessment for either children or adults, with a particular focus on underserved, urban populations of color, and high need populations
  • To promote competence in conveying psychological knowledge, including in community outreach
  • To promote skills in program and health-care system analysis, intervention, leadership, and advocacy
