Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training - Integrated Substance Use Disorder Internship Program (BHWET-RUISIP)

The BHWET RUISIP Newark program is a HRSA‑funded behavioral health training initiative that prepares Integrated Primary Care interns and externs to deliver integrated behavioral health services in high‑need and high‑demand communities. Beginning with its inaugural internship year on July 1, 2026, the program will train six IPC interns and three IPC externs and provide clinical training opportunities across partnering primary care and community health settings in Newark and New Brunswick. The BHWET RUISIP Newark program expands Rutgers’ training capacity by establishing new community‑based experiential sites, including Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, NJMS Medicine Pediatrics, Rutgers Student Health primary care, Newark Beth Israel pediatric integrated care programs, and Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas Health primary care clinics. In addition to developing high‑quality rotation and practicum placements that support long‑term workforce development, the program engages site leadership in ongoing needs assessment and participation in Learning Network and didactic activities.

This initiative is a collaborative mission with partners at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, NJMS Medicine Pediatrics, Rutgers Student Health primary care, Newark Beth Israel pediatric integrated care programs, Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas Health primary care clinics, and additional community‑based health centers in Newark.
