Special Note for the 2023-2024 Application Process: In an effort to adhere to APPIC feedback and guidance on the applicant interview experience, Rutgers UBHC-Newark plans to conduct all of its interviews this year virtually. Applicants who are offered interviews will be provided with specific instructions and video links at that time.
Applicant Interview Policy
We have found that an interview with our staff and a visit to our program is extremely helpful in assessing the fit between an applicant’s needs and the opportunities we offer. This experience is useful both to the applicant and to our program. Therefore, we require an on-site interview as part of the application process. Applicants are notified of their interview status on a rolling basis.
After an initial review of the applications we receive, we contact selected applicants during the second week of December to invite them for interviews. Our interviews are scheduled during December and January. Groups of about sixteen applicants (eight for the child track and eight for the adult tracks) are invited at one time. We ask that applicants set aside most of a day (5-6 hours) to spend with us. During that time, you will meet as a group with the Training Director and Training Committee for an overview of the program, with various faculty and staff to learn about different rotations, and with the current group of interns to hear about their experiences and to take a tour of the facility. Applicants will also be scheduled for individual and group interviews during this time period.
If you wish to visit our site prior to our formal interview period, we would be happy to assign an intern to meet with you and show you around. However, faculty and staff will not be available to meet with you prior to our formal interview schedule.
Statement of Nondiscrimination
The Psychology Internship retains a policy of conducting admissions, educational, and all related and supporting services in a manner which does not discriminate unlawfully because of a person's race, color, creed or religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or other characteristics which lawfully cannot be a basis for the administration of such services. The Internship is committed to encouraging the application from minority students, to identify and correct the effects of any past discrimination in the provision of educational and related services.
Background Check Policy
If you are matched with Rutgers-Newark, the University will conduct a criminal background check at no cost to you. To do so, we will give our Human Resources department your identifying information. While employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check, a criminal conviction does not automatically prohibit employment. Eligibility for employment will be determined by the administration of University Behavioral and Correctional Health Care in consultation with Rutgers Human Resources. Applicants who match to our program but do not successfully pass this background check will not be employed as pre-doctoral interns (APPIC Match policy 6b states, "Appointments of applicants to internship positions may be contingent upon the applicants satisfying certain eligibility requirements. Such eligibility requirements must be clearly specified in the internship programs' written materials and provided to applicants in advance of the deadline for submitting rankings for the APPIC Match.")
